We deal with a wide variety of neck pain at Corsham Physiotherapy, and similarly to backs, neck pain generally falls within two categories:
- Acute sharp pains and/or spasms
- Chronic aching pain. The symptoms of this are usually a stiff, aching neck which may crack and click on movement, perhaps with some dizziness and vision issues. It may cause difficulty sleeping at night.
What causes neck pain?
Acute spasms are usually caused by the neck being stuck in a position, for example as with an awkward sleeping position, or from whiplash e.g. where the car you were in was shunted causing tearing/spasm of neck muscles.
Chronic pain can be caused by a variety of reasons including degeneration of discs, an old injury, or pain that is radiated from damaged nerves along your shoulders or back.
We can also help with many forms of diagnosed neck conditions, providing pain relief, management and advice on self-help measures you can do at home to relieve any discomfort, including:
- Cervical spondylosis
- Cervical dystonia
- Torticollis (wryneck)
- Whiplash
- Radiculopathy, trapped nerves
What can I do if I have neck pain?
If your neck pain is acute, then ‘freeze’ gel can be a great help. Or try a warm shower over your neck. Gently move your shoulders and then gently move your neck through what range of movement is comfortable.
If your neck pain is chronic, try applying heat to the area which can be done through wheat bags, a hot water bottle, or heat patches. Once it is warmed, try stretching your neck to all positions.
